Huang Rong - Jin Yong's most popular female character. Why?
Huang Rong is the best shaped and characterised female character in all Jin Yong's novels. She is also the most talked about over and over again by most of the readers of Jin Yong's novels. Unfortunately, just because she is so popular and so much loved and cherised by many of the readers, especially the male readers,in the adult story forums in many of the adult websites, she has been degenerated into a female character sexually tortured, abused and undergone lots of abnormal sexual acts such as adultery. Why is that so?
We have to date back to the time when Jin Yong writes this novel, She Diao Ying Xiong Chuan, when Huang Rong first appears as a little young girl. This novel is written some time between 1957 and 1959 with some amendments some time afterwards. At this time, such type of novels are not as popular as to day's world which is full of new technological information such as computer, HD TV, high tec mobiles and transportations. The time at 1957 - 1958 is not really very well developed both in thinkings and writings.
The life style of people in China and Hong Kong at that time lead quite simple ways of life that reading something interesting and exciting are beyond their imaginations and are totally out of questions.
It is Jin Yong's She Diao Ying Xiong Chuan that has stirred up the eye sights and profound interests of most the readers at that time. It is true that this novel's plot and story background, the characters and the developments of the whole story is quite straightforward in comparison to Yin Yong's latter novels which carry much deeper complicated presentations of psychological conflicts, but there are three major factors which have attracted the readers' attentions:
Firstly, even though this story follows the Chinese traditionalal style of writing and carries general features of the traditional stories, the creations of Wu Xie with the introduction with so many characters in one single story is a very bold attempt. We have the main male character, Guo Jing, to be educated by seven teachers at the same time, then afterwards reaceiving some sort of teaching from one of the most famous Wu Lin character, The Nine Fingered Begger, or Hong Qi Gong as the story named. Even Guo Jing's seven techers' physical features have immediately captured the readers focus - one is blind, one is a dawf, one is a female, one is fisherman and so on. Such particular features have already caused some very entertainng readings at the time when most of the reading materials are so lack of and so boring.
Besides, the creations of so many Wu Xie fighting styles are also very new to most of the readers, such as the frog style exercised by Ou Yan Feng. When he has crawled down, he will gather energy and power and will beat down his enemy with fearful power once he stands up. All these are so new and fantastic to the readers that as soon as they have started reading this story, they will refuse to stop reading. They will keep on reading no matter where and when they are - in bed or in the toilet. ( I also have such interesting experience ).
Secondly, the popularity of this novel is extensivly reiforced by the creation of a female character, Huang Rong. She is the daughter of one of the most powerful and extreme high intelligence both in thinking and Wu Gong, Huang Yao Shi who is man who fights against the social moral norm followed by every Chinese at that time. Having carried some of such queer character of her father, this young little girl with special freshness in youth and beauties, dominates almost every section or chapter of the whole novel. She is not only beautiful, she is quick witted, intelligent though sometimes she is naughty and mischiveous. Yet she is loyal to love and devoted protect Guo Jing who is so much disliked by her father and most of the male readers. She nearly embodies all the qualities which all the men are looking for. How nice it will be if they have such a type of girl as their wives. This is the common question they have been asking time to time.
In Jin Yong's novels, we have been introduced with many female characters. For example,in Shen Diao Shei Nu, we have Xiao Long Nu as the main female character, then we have Zhao Min, Zhou Zhi Ruo, Xiao Zhao and Yin Li in Yi Tian Tu Long Ji. Yet it is only Huang Rong is most talked about and loved by all readers mainly because she has already carried all the characteristics of the females - beautiful, intelligent, quick witted though sometimes mischiveous, yet very devoted to love and family. Unlike Zhao Min who looks after political power and victory, she looks for a warm family shared with her beloved husband and die with him together in protecting the Song Dynasty. Most importantly, unlike the other female characters who have been swayed between to love or not to love or withhold their love from expressing openly, Huang Rong's love is straight forward without hesitation. Once she has fallen in love with Guo Jing, she has never changed her mind despite very strong objections from her father who considers him as a full, a good for nothing fellow. No objection what so ever can stop her from loving her man whom she considers to have carried a quality that most of the male characters lack of - that is the patriotic devotion to protect Song Chao at the expense of sacrificing his life.
Huang Rong's choice of Guo Jing as her life partner is finally proved to be right. It is true Guo Jing is not as clever and intelligent as his peer groups, yet he is hardworking and never say no under difficulties. Though he is submissive to Huang Rong, he is independent and decisive to shoulder up his manhood to stand up as a national hero to fight against the fierful attacks of the strong Mongolian armies. Guo Jing is not bright in intelligence, but he is bright and outshinig all his counterparts in his devotion to love, not only to his beloved wife, but also his country. He is a hero, a national hero who deverses our appreciations and worships. So we must say Huan Rong's choice of Guo Jing as her life partner is down to the fact right and intelligent. But sadly, just because her choice of Guo Jing as her husband and the wonderful characterizations of this pretty and clever girl, most of the male readers are angry with her for having made such a follish mistake. Some of them are so angry that they simply put her as the sex abusing objects in many of the obscene adult stories. In the websites, there are at least more than 40 long or short stories depicting how she is sexually tortured and abused. But in such a way, Huang Rong's name exists not only in the normal and daily readers' world, but also becomes very popular in the underground adult story world. All these have combined a mysterious force which has made her name become even more popular and talked.
There is one more reason which makes her so well recognized. Since this novel has come to the market in 1959, it has aroused lots of readings among the society in Hong Kong. Very soon, some film directors of the TV and film makers produce movies by using most of the materials of this story. All are heatedly welcome by the audiences and spectators who talk about the developemnts of the story during their dinner time or at their free time with a special focus on Huang Rong.
More importantly, as this novel is so popular and the the TV programes and movies are so welcome by so many Hong Kong people, the wave of heatedness has spreaded to the Far East. In Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, there are many translated copies in their own languages of this novel that very soon Huang Rong has become the talking topic of their daily life.
All in all, it is no surpise to rank Huang Rong as the number one and best characterized female heroine talked and loved by so many readers, (especially the male characters who are jelous with Guo Jing with red eyes) because of the reasons mentioned above.
Huang Rong lives not only in She Diao Ying Xiong Chuan, she also plays an active role in Shen Daio Shei Nu and lives some part at the beginning chapter of Yi Tain Tu Long Ji. It is very rare to see a female character who can occupy so much extensive part in Jin Yong's novels.
Huang Rong, you will be well remembered and appreciated all the time.

An apology to those readers who have found my article irritating:
I am very sorry for having caused so much misunderstanding and unpleasant feelings to those who do not understand what I am saying in my articles.
I must reinstate that I am a Chinese. But as I have been living in a Western country for a very long time, I do not know how to put Chinese words into the computer. Besides, I have very limited knowledge about using computer.
It is all these reasons that I can only reply or post articles in English.
But I will take this rare chance to give my high compliments to our beloved SIS. The Chief Administrators and the Moderators have an excellent mind and vision of expanding SIS to be an internationally well recongnised website. That is the reason why SIS has an English forum area in which those who are able to commuicate can share thier feelings.
Besides, using English in posting replies or comments are also encouraged by these gentlemen. As what I have mentiomed before, I can only reply in English because of my limited knowledge of using computer. But many of the moderators, such as Pighead8, RachCool and dycrystal have encouraged me to keep on posting English comments.
To be honest, all my level ( I am now in level 7) and marks are accumulated by English postings. From this, you can understand how wonderful and nice our Chief Administrators and Moderators are.
Finally I would like to say sorry again for all the trouble caused and I have never tried to boast how good my English is.
