As a player I don't think he deserves it. He only had a couple of good years and while he always had promise because of injuries he never could live up to it. If we are retiring numbers because of promise wiped out by injuries then Ralph Sampson's #50 should be hanging up there.
That said as the Rockets' organization Yao's #11 should be retired. As other posters noted his impact for the organization was far more significant than just what he did on the court.

If you take a step back and stop over analyzing his contributions as a player, retiring his number is a no-brainer.

I really don't get it why people would say he doesn't deserve it. The man had a tremendous work ethic and was a class act both in and out of the game. Yao would have continued playing for the Rockets till the day he should naturally retire from basketball.
But of course, I guess with the kind of fans we have (especially the new ones that just came for either Harden or Lin), it ain't no mystery why people would say such things.

For eight years, Yao was the global face of the franchise. Awesome guy, awesome to watch, and pretty much never did anything you couldn't respect. I don't care if they retire his shorts, I'm down for any excuse that gets him back in town for a couple of days.

And as a Rockets fan who have watched Yao from his rookie year to him leaving the game against the Lakers in 2009, I can honestly say that he was my favorite Rocket in the past decade. Humble, hard working, ambassador to the game, the face of the franchise, and oh yeah... THE BEST ROCKETS PLAYER IN THE PAST DECADE.
Congrats to Yao. And even knowing the injuries, I am glad the Rockets selected you with the 1st pick in the 2002 NBA draft.

Yao Ming restored Houston's pride, after fighting through pain and injuries. His best game was against the Lakers, when he came out of the tunnel to lead us to a big win. He played at a high level in the latter part of his shortened career. I salute Yao Ming.

I've said it many times before and I'll say it again. It's unfortunate that Yao ended his career by injury because it has shrouded the perspectives of a lot of onlookers and fans about how good of a player he was. It's too bad.

As a person, he deserves it but as a player, I'm not really sure. He was a good player when healthy but dealt with too many injuries and had to retired. But is that enough to retire his number?
As good of a person he was to his country and the community, I feel like Yao didn't accomplish as much as I would expect him to in order to have his number retire. But either way, he represents the Rockets the past decade.

I assume this is for bringing millions of Chines fans to the Rockets / NBA. If that is the case he deserves it. His play on the court does not dictate jersey retirement. Nothing against the guy but he was never a superstar caliber player.

Whether you think he as a player deserves it is beside the point.
He made a huge impact in a significant way on the Rockets as a franchise, so retiring his jersey is appropriate. It's no different than Carroll Dawson having a "jersey" retired in the rafters, CD made a significant impact on the franchise and therefore has a presence in the rafters.

I agree 100%. Yao was so much more than a basketball player. When I think of all the attention he received and how much pressure he was under, it's amazing how well he handled all that. Even with all the injuries I think the Rockets were lucky to have him as long as they did. All his former teammates and even his competitors on the court always had good things to say about Yao. Like other have said, the man was a global icon, he was the face of the franchise for the better part of a decade. He made us relevant in the eyes of everyone in the NBA and the rest of the world. His impact on the franchise and the rest of the NBA was immense.
So congrats big fellah, I think it's well deserved!

It's unfortunate how Yao's career ended up playing out. He was a special athlete in his own regard, had a very diverse offensive repertoire, and FFS, he could hit a damn free throw despite being taller than 7 feet. He did so much for the game of basketball and the NBA that it's ridiculous. I wish I could still be watching him play and grow. Those Rockets teams with Yao and T-Mac were legit. Any adulation for this man is well deserved.

Even though he didn't win anything, I still think he deserves this. Back then Yao was pretty much the representative for the Rockets. He was a dominating center, and unlike lots of 7 footers his game wasn't one dimensional. He also did so much for the NBA internationally.

He'd still dominate these kids if you gave him 9 months, if it werent for the risk that he might never walk again if he got injured once more.

He deserves it. How he was able to reconcile his NBA career and the Nationalteam mentally was impressive even the games he played for China cost him his health and us a great Center. He always fought to get back.
And before any discussion starts whether he deserves it or not in comparison to Hakeem and his production for the Rockets we should be aware. Hakeem was unique maybe the best Center ever played this game. But that doesn't mean that the Rockets can't retire a number of a Center anymore or even the NBA induct a Center into the HOF.

As a player, Yao was well on his way to be a HOFamer. He had a very similar career trajectory to Dirk and Pau Gasol. He had a good chance to lead us to a championship like those two did. Too bad his career got cut short by injury.
But in term of influence, he is second only to Dream (and arguably more) for any players who ever wore a Rockets jersey.

Wow, great news. I still remember when Yao ming came over to the US; I was never really into sports but it was the hype around Yao in Houston that got me watching basketball. I remember the first laker game, the charles barkley ass kiss, every playoff series (**** dallas) and sadly I remember holding my breath everytime he fell  . I have been a huge Rockets fan ever since he was drafted; he was the reason I started watching sports, so Yao will always hold a special place in my eyes. I think this honor is well deserved.
P.S. This is why I don't get too mad at LOF or HOF because one day they may become True Rockets Fans.
P.S.S. Don't let my join date fool you, I have been lurking Clutchfans since Yao was drafted, through steve franchise era, through the T-Mac era, through the aaron brooks era, through the lowry era and today. :P

Yao completely deserves it. The guy was a beast. He was the best at his position for years during the NBA. His career is tragic because there is always the question of 'what if'? What if he had been fully healthy? What if the Rockets did a better job limiting his minutes? What if he didn't play a full NBA season as well as all the time in China?
But there is no denying that he was a dominant player. There is no denying that he revolutionized basketball worldwide as well as bringing the Rockets to the forefront of popularity for an entire other country.
Not only that, he poured his heart and soul into this team. He desperately wanted to succeed and win. And, at the time, we were comparing that to our other superstar who always seemed lackadaisical, uncaring, lazy and at times seemed to have phantom injuries.
Yao was a great player. He won several awards. He gave everything to our organization and our team. And his impact spread much farther than just the NBA.
For that, I fully think that he deserves to have his number retired.

If he was never hurt, he'd play for the Rockets forever, 10, 15 years and no other team, I believe he was that loyal.

Totally deserved honor for Yao Ming. Time flies by quickly, and it does bring back those fond memories. It's a shame, that talks about Yao would sometimes be associated with whatifs and coulda/woulda. But he tried his best throughout his whole NBA career with Houston Rockets, and has always put the team at first place.

I don't think Yao deserves it. Sure, he was a great guy and probably changed the NBA in more ways than we know, but compare him to the other guys who had jerseys retired:
Olajuwon (We all know what he did)
Clyde (crucial part of the 2nd championship team)
Calvin Murphy (played for us for 13 years, all-time team leader in assists, 2nd in points and steals for the team)
Moses Malone (won two MVPs while in Houston)
Carol Dawson (part of the Rockets organization for 28 years)
Rudy T (aside from his coaching accolades here, he's the 3rd highest scorer for us and spent his whole career here).
Compare that with Yao. While he certainly was a good player and put up big numbers, he did not win us any championships, nor win any major awards.

姚明的球衣必须在火箭退役啊，这姚明对火箭的忠诚那是至始至终的，凭姚明的实力他完全有能力在职业生涯的巅峰选择一个有夺冠实力的球队，但是姚明没有，就这点就应该在火箭退役姚明的球衣！

完全从成绩来看还不够格，但是对球队的发展来看特别是对老板亚历山大
没有姚明的出现火箭绝不会发展的如此顺风顺水的

单纯从成绩来看，姚明很一般，不值得这样的对待。但是想到他的巨大人气和中国市场，给他再高的荣誉他也当的起。
