Here I Am in America with My Dream
A year ago, I said goodbye to my hometown and traveled thousands of miles away to America. Though there are so many memorable mementos I don’t want to let go, the magic America is what I looking forward to as well. “This is a ‘one way trip’” When I eventually arrived in America, I told myself. Here my dream started—matriculated by a key university, which is a significant factor to my future. With no doubts that I’m an ambitious person, here I am in America with my dream.
“Well begun is half done” Hopefully and confidently I was looking forward to the new school, wondering how different it is from China. According to what I had heard in China, study is much easier here. This eased me so much till I started the first week in school. The first week destroyed my confidence completely. That was the time when I realized how serious my limitation of English is. The English requirement here presents a striking contrast to what I’ve learned in China. The gap is so huge that it seems to fill the Pacific Ocean between China and America.
Since then I decided to spend more time on English. I write down every term of each subject in my notebook separately, and search them one by one using both internet and the dictionary as soon as I get home. It helps me to catch on to the content of the courses so that I can understand teachers’ instructions and do well on tests. At the same time I find out that science is easier to comprehend because the principles and formulas are common in the universe. What I’ve learned in China of science is a typical example which confirms the importance of knowledge, “Knowledge is power.”
Also, I study for new vocabulary every weekend and communicate with others more often. Therefore I improve my English day by day. My temporary aim is to speak English just like a native American. “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration;” They have the talent and I have the efforts.
While I struggle to make progress in my studies, I dance and swim at the same time. I think highly of exercise. I believe that exercise could make me feel happy and confident and provide me a strong body. It also gives me opportunities to make friends with people and meet new things.
Yesterday, I finished school year 09-10 with a class ranking of 95% and a score of 25 on ACT; Today, I face a whole new school year and the challenges of keeping my academic performance as well as getting a higher ACT score. I know this is the only way I can be matriculated by a key university, and this is how it’s done.
“Firm determination moves mountains” Here I am in America with my dream and approach it step by step. Finally I’ll make it come true.
